Leviticus, the third book of Moses and the Torah (or Pentateuch), is traditionally linked to Moses, with other scripture supporting his authorship (Matthew 8:4; Luke 2:22; Romans 10:5). The title “Leviticus” comes from the Greek for “pertaining to the Levites,” reflecting its focus on priestly laws and duties essential to Israelite worship and the responsibilities of the Levites. The Levites were the tribe of Israel that had responsibility over aspects of tabernacle worship, and the regulations set forth in Leviticus were of prime importance in their duties.
